Biography/Biografie

Prof. Dr. Andy Temmerman graduated, cum laude, as a dentist (DDS) in 2007 at the University of Ghent in Belgium. In the same year he started the post-graduate education in Periodontology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. In 2010 he graduated as an 'EFP certified' periodontologist (MSc). Since then, he earned the  Belgian title of 'tandarst-specialist in de parodontologie'

Since 2009 he works in a private clinic (ParoPlus, Aalst). This clinic focusses totally on periodontology and implant dentistry, together with his collegues Stefan Matthijs, Dr. Maarten Glibert and Sofie Naessens. He beheld his connection to the KU Leuven as a clinical and research consultant.

In 2011 he decided to start research projects in a PhD project with promotor Prof. Dr. Marc Quirynen (KU Leuven) and co-promotors Prof. Dr. Joke Duyck (KU Leuven) & Prof. Dr. Reinhilde Jacobs (KU Leuven).
This research focusses on the placement of oral implants in patients with impaired bone quality and bone quantity. In May 2017 he defended his PhD thesis in front of jury members Prof. Dr. France Lambert (Université de Liège, Belgium), Prof. Dr. Frank Schwarz (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany), Prof. Dr. Stefan Renvert (Kristianstad University, Sweden), Prof. Dr. Stan Politis (KU Leuven, Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery) and Prof. Dr. Robert Hermans (KU Leuven, Department of Imaging and Pathology).

In 2018, he was appointed associate professor at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Microbiology of the KU Leuven. He teaches head & neck anatomy in the undergraduate dentistry curriculum and various topics in the postgraduate Periodontology curriculum.

Prof. Dr. Temmerman frequently lectures in Belgium and outside Belgium.
He is co-(author) of 25+ scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He functions as a referee for the journals: "Journal of Clinical Periodontology", "Clinical Oral Implants Research", Clinical Implant Dentistry & Related Research" and "Clinical Oral Investigations". Since 2018, he is a member of the editorial board of the "European Journal of Oral Implantology".

In 2015 he received the price for "best Abstract" during the EAO meeting in Rome. Also in 2016, he received the price for best presentation during the EAO meeting Stockholm.

Prof. Dr. Andy Temmerman studeerde in 2007, cum laude, af als tandarts aan de Universiteit Gent.
In datzelfde jaar begon hij aan een (EFP erkende) 3 jaar durende Master-na-Master opleiding en klinisch postgraduaat in de Parodontologie aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
In 2010 leverde hem dat, na een examen voor de Europese Federatie voor Parodontologie (EFP), de titel 'tandarts-specialist in de parodontologie' op.

Sinds 2009 is hij werkzaam in een private praktijk (ParoPlus, Aalst) welke zich uitsluitend richt op de parodontologie en implantologie, samen met collega parodontologen Stefan Matthijs, Dr. Maarten Glibert en mondhygienste Sofie Naessens. Hij bleef echter wel steeds verbonden aan de afdeling Parodontologie van de KU Leuven als consulent.

In 2011 besloot hij de doctoraatsstudies aan te vatten met als promotor Prof. Dr. Marc Quirynen en co-promotoren Prof. Dr. Reinhilde Jacobs en Prof. Dr. Joke Duyck. Het onderzoek richt zich hierbij naar implantaatplaatsing bij patiënten met kwalitatief/kwantitatief gehypothekeerd bot. In mei 2017 verdedigde hij met succes dit proefschrift voor juryleden: Prof. Dr. France Lambert (Université de Liège), Prof. Dr. Stefan Renvert (Kristianstad University, Zweden), Prof. Dr. Frank Schwarz (Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Duitsland), Prof. Dr. Stan Politis (KU Leuven) en Prof. Dr. Robert Hermans (KU Leuven).

In 2018 werd hij benoemd tot associate professor aan de afdeling Parodontologie & orale microbiologie, KU Leuven. Hij is verantwoordelijk voor het onderdeel hoofd & hals anatomie in de opleiding tandarts en verschillende onderdelen in het postgraduaat onderwijs tot parodontoloog.

Prof. Dr. Andy Temmerman geeft regelmatig lezingen binnen het domein van de Parodontologie en vooral de Implantologie, op congressen en permanente vormingsdagen, zowel in binnen als buitenland.

Hij is (co-)auteur van meer dan 25 wetenschappelijke artikels in het domein van de implantologie en parodontologie.
Tevens is een wetenschappelijk reviewer voor de tijdschriften "Journal of Clinical Periodontology", "Clinical Oral Implants Research", Clinical Implant Dentistry & Related Research" en "Clinical Oral Investigations". Sinds, 2018, is hij lid van de 'editorial board' van het tijdschrift 'European Journal of Oral Implantology".
 

Begin 2015 won hij de prijs voor het beste 'Abstract-Poster' op een internationaal congres (EAO - Rome), gekoppeld aan IIS studies van DentsplyImplants. In datzelfde jaar ontving hij ook de prijs van de 'European Association for Osseointegration' voor beste presentatie tijdens het congres in Stockholm.
